Book Selection and Beginning Conversations

Effective nonfiction authors use an extensive toolbox of visual strategies to show us relative size. Look for features that convey scale in the illustrations such as scale diagrams, scale models, and close-ups. Comparisons with familiar references—like a tree or an adult—are another common and effective tool deliberately used by illustrators to convey scale. In fiction, keep your eye out for stories that play with scale by increasing or decreasing the size of the characters or setting (dollhouse books like The Tub People and imaginary worlds like Jumanji).

As you search for books that shout scale, make the titles work for you. Look for titles that contain a comparison such as too many or hint at one end of the scale or another. When you see a title like In the Tall, Tall Grass (Fleming), How Much Is a Million? (Schwartz), The Great Big Enormous Turnip (Tolstoy), or The Little House (Burton), there is a good chance that scale is central to the book. (See Figure 5.2 for a beginning list of books that shout scale and comparison.)
